PlayStation State of Play live report - watch it here for news on the next PS5 games

All of the updates as they happened.

PlayStation has chosen Tokyo Game Show week to present another State of Play showcase. The show, set to start at 10pm BST/2pm PT/5pm ET, will run for approximately 35 minutes and will include a segment on Housemarque's Saros, a third-person action game set to release at some point in 2026.

What else is going to be there? Well, rumours persist that we might see Wolverine from Insomniac, but perhaps set your expectations lower to allow for a pleasant surprise rather than disappointment.

You can watch it here via the video below, and Bertie and Tom will be covering it live on the blog should you want to enjoy the banter of the duo being called the "Adam and Joe of games media" - others opted for Bodger and Badger.

Key points

Hi everyone. Just popping in early to say that unless Sony shows off a sequel to MotorStorm RC I will put my PS5 in the bin. I think that's the kind of measured approach to these showcases that we all need to adopt.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry
Rahmus says: Gravity Rush 3 or bust.

This is what I'm after. Proper "toys out the pram" statements.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry
UsefulIdiot says: A £34 re-release of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, please! -Tom (probably) 😜

Right, listen. I will only pay £34 for actual quality.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry
2much says: A £34 re-release of Bloodborne!

Right, listen. Lots of people would pay £34 for a mostly straight port of Bloodbone but in 4K. Let's not pretend they wouldn't.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Will we see games announced for non-PlayStation platforms?

While I don't expect the likes of Wolverine (if it's at the showcase) to be announced for anything other than PS5, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the smaller titles (or older games) revealed for other platforms. PC and Switch seem most likely, but maybe we'll see some make their way to Xbox too.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry
Rogueywon says: How about a remaster of Knack & Knack 2 - £34 each or £59 for both.

Knack 2 was actually pretty good.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Any third-party surprises?

While a lot of attention will be on what Sony brings to the table tonight, we're bound to get a few games from third parties. The question is, are they going to be updates on games out soon (Battlefield 6, for example) or games we haven't seen anything on yet?

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry
HeyMyNameIS says: Please Sony, just release a 60 fps patch for Bloodborne so we can finally stop having to hear people whine about it day and night. I don’t like the game or have the game, but I’ll buy the patch anyway if it helps us get some peace…

What would people pay for a 4K 60FPS Bloodborne patch?

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Right, we're all off to eat some dinner and make summoning cirlces for a sequel to PS3 classic Puppeteer (just me?). We'll be back at around 9.45 for live coverage. See you then!

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry
N01R says: hooray for my skyhigh expectations bein let down again. anyways, got a chili simmerin away and lookin forward to that and the show.

I wish I had a chilli simmering to be hoenst. Anyway, about an hour until the show begins. Get all your wishes in now or don't come complaining when the game you wanted doesn't appear.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Good evening everybody, and good evening Tom, the Alan Shearer to my, um, Clive Tyldesley? Is that still a suitable reference in 2025?

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Rogueywon I can't believe you tempted fate by asking for a Knack remake! And Tom I can't believe you agreed!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
spookyxelectric says: My no chance in hell wish is a new WipEout. Let's gooooooo, impending disappointment!

A new WipEout - now we're talking!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

I'm not sure I'll - we'll - know what to do if Sony really announces a Bloodborne remake/remaster/update/whatever. It'll be like that time they actually announced a Final Fantasy 7 remake, and Shenmue 3, and The Last Guardian, all in that conference, and people were crying, and the sun fell from the sky, and water turned to wine. It'll be pandemonium.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
FTJT says: I reckon we're going to see a big new AAA Soulslike, from a studio with no track record of their own IP, scored with a gloomy cod-metal cover of an 80s pop song and some portentous statements about 'the world before' divorced from any meaning, with no release date.

I think they'll also say the word 'PlayStation' at some point.

And there'll be a strong chance of dark fantasy Soulslikes blowing in from the East.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
MarcusJ says: Tsk. I’m going to have to move to plug my phone in for this, and that means stopping playing Baby Steps briefly.

Oho - enjoying it? Whereabouts are you in the game now? No spoilers! (I wish I could play more Baby Steps. It's not a game that wants to be played quickly though, is it?)

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
MarcusJ says: @Bertie, I spent most of today playing Baby Steps with a friend, and it was some of the most fun I’ve had gaming in a long time. What a remarkable and strange game.

Oh I'm glad to hear it!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
MarcusJ says: @Bertie - oh, I’m not that far in (I don’t think) we spent about four hours playing it, probably. Was also playing Silent Hill and Sonic CrossWorlds. But we kept falling down to earlier places and then climbing back up again. Probably seen six or seven little cutscenes, all told.

Have you managed to keep your cool so far?

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

I wonder if we'll get a Wolverine release date today - I wonder if we'll see the game at all. If we do, I doubt it'll be spring 2026 and go anywhere near Grand Theft Auto 5, so perhaps it'll target the autumn? I could see that.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Evening everyone. Spurs won. I drank a kombucha. Can this night get any better? Go on, Sony, show us Wolverine!

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

10 minutes to go

We're creeping up on 10 minutes to go. The calm before the storm.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

There's been a bit of an issue behind the scenes as Bertie got on the blower to argue over whether he's Bodger or Badger? I think the answer is obvious to be honest.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Badger!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
Danzig85 says: “ I wonder if we'll get a Wolverine release date today - I wonder if we'll see the game at all. If we do, I doubt it'll be spring 2025 and go anywhere near Grand Theft Auto 5, so perhaps it'll target the autumn? I could see that.”

@Bertie - have you had some of Tom’s Kombucha, or just bought a DeLorean?

Argh! Curses! /stealth fixes

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
FTJT says: Stuck the stream on. Prophecy time: this is the sort of music you'd have on the trailer if you didn't understand why the specificity of wipeout 2097 was so important, so good chance of a 6/10 wipeout game announced today

This is perfect WipEout music isn't it. WipEout menu music.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

I'd post a photo of Bodger and Badger for those of you who have no clue what we're on about, but it would be bound to result in us getting done for copyright infringement. I can't be the one who brings down Eurogamer over a mashed potato-loving mustelid.

Tom Orry avatar

Rahmus says: We’ve just opened up a fresh pack of Jammy Dodgers over here. We are braced.

Preach, Rahmus, preach!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

The show begins

We're inside two minutes and excitement is mounting. No matter how many of these broadcasts and conferences I watch, that excitement is always there. What are we about to see?

One minute to go. Sony's PlayStation shape-themed clock is ticking down.

10 seconds, nine, eight... Here we go!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Numbers!

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Housemarque's Saros opens the show

The show begins with Saros, by the looks of it, Housemarque's new game.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

I knew it was Saros, but a small part of me hoped they were starting off with a new Sonic after we saw that gold ring.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Hi Gregory!

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

We've seen a slight glimpse of the Returnal follow-up Saros before. This time, we're seeing gameplay. My gods it's pretty, in a Mars-coloured (not the chocolate bar), sandy, red and yellow way. We're seeing gameplay running on a PS5 apparenty.

We follow the main character as he dashes intoa temple like structure. The first proper power we see is a Soltari Shield, which absorbs projectiles and defends you.

We're straight into action here. There are projectiles flying everywhere, lots of speed, lots of colour, lots of dodging and jumping over beam patterns.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Looks like fans of Returnal are going to be happy.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Me moments before death. I don't think I'll be able to play this. Returnal was too much, and this, despite looking great, will likely be the same.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

What is any self-respecting action game these days without a dash, eh? Hades says hi.

So the hook here is that when the sun dies, the level reloads, I think, and you loop round again.

Oh, we're seeing a power called Second Chance which is like an on-the-spot resurrection, which is handy. It's part of the progression system that ensures, "You always come back stronger." I bloody hope so given all the action we're seeing.

Here's a huge boss with many arms and floating! That was impressive slash terrifying.

No dying sun. And that appears to be it.

Saros is coming next year.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Saros releases 20th March 2026

Saros doesn't seem to have ignited your excitement fires.

Oh a release date! 20th March 2026.

Ah this is Disco Elysium studio ZA/UM's new game. It looks a lot like Disco Elysium. Honestly I'm a bit confused which of that original team is now making what, but there's no denying this game's lineage - it's very similar in look and play to Disco.

But this time we're a female protagonist. Zero Paradies: For Dead Spies, this one is called. Coming 2026.

Robert Purchese avatar

Is this Flight Simulator coming to PlayStation 5?

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

This (a PS5) is an Xbox!

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Flight Simulator comes to PlayStation 5 this December

It's not that surprising to see a Microsoft game on PlayStation any more, after all. So here's Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 coming 8th December 2025 to PlayStation 5.

Robert Purchese avatar

Execute on the T of Execute? What happened to "1, 2, 3, go"?

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Aha. Battlefield 6. Night vision: check. Catchy codewords on comms: check. Macho posturing: check.

I always quite fancied joining the army, you know, which is ridiculous thing if you know me. In my head, I imagine being in the army is like this. Except maybe I stay at home and don't get involved?

Anyway, Battlefield 6's campaign looks good. But does it have Camaros in? That's the real question.

Enhanced visuals for Deus Ex Remastered.

Tom Orry avatar

Deus Ex Remastered coming to PS5 in February

Deus Ex Remastered is coming, courtesy of Aspyr, which I've only just realised is pronounced "aspire". (Where's our KOTOR remake you cowards!)

The remaster looks smarter but also has stuff like haptic controller feedback.

It's coming 5th February 2026.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Here's Friday 13th studio Illfonic with Halloween: The Game, now, which is out really soon - 26th September 2026.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Nope!

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Last Epoch, the quite well regarded action RPG (Diablo-like), is in development for PS5. (Not sure why you'd need it with Path of Exile 2.)

And Last Epoch is getting an expansion called Orobyss at the same time.

Nioh 3 releases 6th February

Ooh we're going to get a Nioh 3 release date!

Nioh 3 releases 6th February 2026.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
FTJT says: You're close with that release date, Bobert. Within a year

Oops what did I do now!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

We're getting what seems like a Dynasty Warriors montage to some glamrock guitar. Oh it's Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition Remastered.

19th March 2026.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Did I do the Anime May Cry joke last time?

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Gosh. That was a chesty shot to start this trailer. Bandai Namco. A rined world. Hello is that Dante?

Is this an odd blend of games? I can't place it. It's got some funky looking demonic powers and demonic baddies.

It's not Dante, Bertie, it's Code Vein 2, coming 30th January.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
FTJT says: Halloween is next September, not this one, unfortunately

So far my show review is Alan_Partridge_Shrugging.gif

Much obliged!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Dom absolutely adored the Final Fantasy Tactics remake, by the way. Check out their five-star review if you haven't already.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Now we're talking!

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Uncle Death? Who on earth is this? We're seeing the sequel to Let it Die. PvPvE. Mark that off your bingo card. You play as raiders and jump into a huge hole along with other raiders, grabbing loot and losing everything if you die. You lose your character's body if you die!

This looks wild. You keep switching bodies, building the ultimate version of yourself. How deep can you go? That's the question. Is that the questio? Can you even ask that question?

Still, the game looks novel enough.

It's out this year. 3rd December.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

This looks both really unique and cool, and really hard for my brain to parse as I look at it.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Ooh, this looks interesting. A knight or sorts runs in a side-scrolling 2D world, but it's a sketched world, not unlike Braid's, but a bit less green and flowery. It's like the pages of a book. Jumping puzzles, boss fights.

Chronoscript: The Endless End, it's called. Coming 2026. There's still time to change that name, then.

A bit more detail on the game: a 2D exploratory action adventure. Dark fantasy! Mark it off your bingo card. Hand-drawn pen style. That's all we're allowed to know.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Crimson Desert launches 19th March

Knights! Pearl Abyss. Is this Crimson Desert? Is that game ever coming out?

This has a Scottish bent to it - a Celtic bent. You've got to rally the clans and kick out some invading forces. You're fighting for "pie well". Really? They named their pivotal city that?

Ooh dragon riding!

19th March for Crimson Desert. Bertie game!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Crimson Desert has always looked nice, but I'm still not convinced it'll be as great to play.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

PlayStation gets official wireless speakers!

No way, PlayStation is getting official wireless speakers?

Sometimes I feel like Sony's engineers just have nothing to do. But, like, I'd probably buy these. They look like they're more a desktop thing than a sofa thing, although apparently we can put one on each of our bedside tables because that won't be disturbing for anyone else sleeping there.

They're coming in 2026. Strange!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Can't wait to get those speakers out as I attempt to use them with the PS Portal on the train.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Last of Us Part 2 Remaster coming to PS Plus

PlayStation Plus spot now. Alan Wake 2 is coming 7th October. Nice. Cocoon is also coming then, too. Hot!

The Last of Us Part 2 is also coming to PS Plus on 26th September. This includes the remaster, too.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Gran Turismo 7 getting a big free update in December

Oh Yamauchi-san to tell us about Gran Turismo. He's sharing an update with us. The Gran Turismo series has passed 100 million units sold. Is that it, Kaz, that's all you've got?

There's a Spec 3 update coming for GT7 in December. It's got two new race tracks, eight new veichies, a new circuit experience, a data logger, and more.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

In summary, cars.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

A limited edition God of War controller that's white with red decal is coming. I mean, it's okay.

Now we're moving on to a new game trailer.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Wolverine!

It's Wolverine!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Wolverine isn't for kids, then.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Wolverine launches autumn 2026

The claws go through heads. He's got the yellow suit on. We're seeing chunks of gameplay in a montage. It is very, very bloody. There's Sabretooth. He's big.

It looks much more grizzly in tone than the Spider-Man games, but the action is every bit as fluid as you think.

"I ain't no hero. I'm Wolverine."

Autumn 2026. I said that!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

Insomniac's creative director Marcus Smith is telling us more. Wolverine is an unreliable narrator he says. Ooh, we're going to find out which actor is playing him. Don't be Troy Baker, don't be Troy Baker. I bet it's Troy Baker. (I don't actually mind Troy Baker.)

It's... Liam Mcintyre. Who? Apparently he's best known for Spartacus: Vengeance. Never heard of it. He's also an Aussie like Hugh Jackman though, so, you know.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

It's Liam from Spartacus: Vengeance.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

We're getting a developer spot on Wolverine here, so we're seeing more clips of footage interspersed. We're going to Japan, apparently - anyone else read that graphic novel where he goes to Japan?

Mystique's in it!

Wolverine has got "phenomenal" blood tech, we're being told. Claws go up through the chin to the top of the head. They're really going for it. I'm all in. I love Wolverine.

Claws through the face: check. It's Wolverine as seen in Wovlerine vs. Deadpool, I guess.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
HelderCH says: We got Bloodtech before Bloodborne Remastered.

Touché!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

We're going to see more of Wolverine in spring 2026, apparently. In a special State of Play, I wonder?

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Is that... it? We're getting an end-of-show-like roundup now.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
UrineTrouble says: Surely no-one IS complaining after that right? RIGHT?

Just wait.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

The show ends

That is it. 40 minutes. Brief. Then again, why blabber on when you've delivered what people came for?

Wolverine was an exciting reveal, for sure, and Insomniac has proved it can deliver the superhero goods. I was surprised recently to discover Marvel's Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 are among the best-selling PlayStation games ever, I think it was, in the US.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
simples says: Start good, end great, everything in between could have been an email.

10/10 summary.

Sorry I mean Essential.

I mean five stars.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

I'm more interested in Wolverine than I am Insomniac's Spider-Man games. But I really want another Ratchet & Clank game.

Tom Orry avatar
Tom Orry

A few interesting things in there but a relatively thin showing barring Saros and obviously Wolverine, all told.

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese

Oh and don't forget the PlayStation wireless speakers!

Robert Purchese avatar
Robert Purchese
MarcusJ says: Some interesting stuff.

Nice that they took time to check in with PSVR2. Aha ha ha.

Ah, yes, that.

Robert Purchese avatar

Hey I'm with you! Although less with the cable managed part. I am chaotic.

They announced "Bloodtech" if that counts?
