PS5 system architect Mark Cerny and AMD senior vice president Jack Huynh sat facing the camera

Tech | New PlayStation 6 tech all but confirmed by Sony and AMD - and it looks like it'll make its way into other hardware too

Next-gen consoles, handhelds and desktop graphics cards are all set to benefit.

Sony and AMD just announced three key technologies that look likely to come to the PlayStation 6 and future AMD graphics cards, with PS5 system architect Mark Cerny and AMD senior vice president Jack Huynh teaming up to deliver the news. The talk is fairly technical, but the three core features - Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores and Universal Compression - look set to make a big impact on future AMD-based hardware. The main goal is speeding up computionally-expensive ray tracing and path tracing in some novel ways, as well as reducing the cost of the upscaling and denoising techniques they rely on.

Official Battlefield 6 image showing several soldiers climbing over rubble

Review | Battlefield 6 review

Thrall of Duty.

After the muddled innovations and watered-down warfare of Battlefield 2042, Battlefield 6 was pitched as a return to what made the series great. And it is that…mostly. Gone are the ponderous 128-player maps that stretched 2042's action too thin, and the pseudo-futuristic setting with gimmicky hero shooter-like abilities. Back are the rollicking 64-player slugfests, the more grounded quartet of soldier classes, the lowercase modern warfare setting, and even the single-player campaign. All this infused with a fetching burned-orange aesthetic and a renewed emphasis on crumbling, billowing destruction.

The edge of a Minecraft world. We're at sea in the chunky pixelated world and in the distance, a great wall-like thing arises from the water, looking very much like the top-down view of a Minecraft world.

It took 14-and-a-half years of walking but finally someone has made it to the edge of the world. Of Minecraft.

Absolum key art showing several fantasy characters, the main one with a large sword, in a cartoon montage against red background

Having spent night after night throwing myself into Absolum, I remain hopelessly charmed by it. A spirited fantasy that dons the bande dessinée mantle, it's a fantastic case study in how to make combo-centric fist fights feel good and look grand all at once. It's a beautiful brawler – and one that'll need to make good use of its mitts, given the number of killer releases fighting over every crumb of attention this month.

Little Nightmares 3 protagonists Low and Alone holding hands, superimposed over an eerie green backdrop.

Review | Little Nightmares 3 review

Sleep paralysis.

There's a moment around Little Nightmares 3's midpoint when, following a tepid first half so safe it often feels like a tribute act, new series developer Supermassive finally seems to hit its stride. Slowly the hum of a mysterious subterranean void gives way to rain-lashed walkways as our diminutive protagonists brave the exterior of some vast, heaving machine. Then the reveal of the grand Carnevale, its sprawl of big top tents and twinkling lights, its parade of grotesque fairground thrill seekers, all perfectly framed. Little Nightmares 3's often slavish adherence to the past means it's burdened with far too much frustrating legacy faff, but even so, it's hard not to get lost in the spectacle of it all.
